Tip: There are two main methods for using your mortar and pestle set – pounding and grinding.
- Pounding is used to crush up larger pieces. Just as it sounds, put the ingredients in the bottom of the Himalayan salt mortar and use the rounded edge of the pestle to pound them down. Place a hand over the mortar when pounding small ingredients like seeds, so they can’t bounce out.
- Grinding is used to break small pieces into even smaller ones, to mix the flavors, and to mix in a bit of the salt. A trick is to swirl the pestle around the inside of the mortar to grind the ingredients together. If you want to add a little more salt, simply grind the pestle around the top portion of the mortar. You’ll see little white marks on the mortar, which indicate salt is being ground out.
